The research group, based at DIW Berlin, empirically assesses public firms’ ability to manage recent socio-economic challenges, such as demographic changes and the transition to a low-carbon energy economy, implying infrastructure investments and innovative solutions.
Our research has been supported by the Leibniz Association during the research project Kommunale Infrastrukturunternehmen zwischen Energiewende und demografischem Wandel (2013-2016) and by the German Science Foundation during the research project Modern State-Owned Firms: An Empirical Analysis of Productivity, Market Power, and Innovation (2019 - 2022).
We draw on a large, unique dataset on German utilities in the energy and water sector, enriched with data on German municipalities, the German economy, weather and environmental data, as well as with regulatory data.
